Donut Island

We’ve been soaking up the sun and hitting the water as much as possible up here in the sunny north of The Coromandel. One of the highlights has been Donut Island. A few kilometers off the shore sits what appears to be a small round island, a dot on the beaches horizon. Get closer though and you’ll spot an entrance, maybe three meters wide, a small mouth gaping into a hole in the centre of the island. A little (though slightly rough) lagoon sits inside.
We hired kayaks on the beach side, $40 for a double for four hours and kayaked out to the island. It was spectacular. It felt like a scene from that film The Beach with Leo DiCaprio jumping off  cliffsides!
