SlutWalk Aotearoa

Yesterday marked New Zealands second ‘SlutWalk’, what is looking likely to become an annual event here in the capital. Slutwalk has become an international event that began in Toronto after a police officer stood up at a safety talk at York University and said ”women should avoid dressing like sluts if they don’t want to be victimised”. This caused quite the stir! The organisers behind New Zealand SlutWalk ‘say it should be an annual event because every week there are more cases of women being demeaned or blamed when they are the victim of a sexual assault’.

I went down to Cuba Mall to check it all out. It was quite raw to see such a mix within the crowd; women and men of all ages carrying some very poignant signs. Well done kiwis! I’m a proud fellow citizen yet again.

Addition: Todays article on stuff.co.nz is on topic…people can do some truly awful things…
